UK innovation welcomed down under by Brisbane City Council
9th March, 2010
First Australian council approves method of building super fast broadband networks via the sewer developed by British firm i3 Group.
UK innovation is being adopted the other side of the world, as today, low cost fibre optic infrastructure specialists, i3 Group, has announced that its unique method of building super fast broadband networks has been approved by Brisbane City Council.
i3 Group has pioneered the use of ready made ducts including sewer pipes as narrow as 150mm to lay fibre optic cable to be used for super fast broadband and connectivity - known as the FS System. The pilot in Brisbane was to build a 1.4km fibre optic network. This was done over the course of three nights and also demonstrated how little disruption is caused as there were no traffic jams during the day.
Elfed Thomas, CEO, i3 Group said: "The major benefit of the FS System is the time it takes to lay the fibre is so much quicker than road digs, the usual method of building these kind of networks. It also means that there is much less disruption to the surrounding area while work is underway.
"Brisbane City Council was astounded at how quickly we were able to complete the pilot, and this, coupled with the work we have completed in the UK, was proof enough that our low cost method works."
Elfed Thomas is the inventor of the FS System and founded H2O Networks Ltd in 2002. The i3 Group was formed in 2009 as a result of phenomenal growth over the previous three years and due to the huge opportunity overseas, H2O International Ltd was launched in the same year. H2O International manages international partnerships and licenses which allow companies to use the i3 Group's methods of network build. In addition to Australia, there is already presence in South Africa, Middle East and Ireland.
The Group announced it was opening a subsidiary in Australia last year, and this approval from Brisbane City Council means that residents and businesses in the city should be the first to benefit.
